The U.S. State Department is instructing its staff to reject H-1B visa applications from anyone who has worked on fact-checking or content moderation, according to an internal memo sent this week. "If you uncover evidence an applicant was responsible for, or complicit in, censorship or attempted censorship of protected expression in the United States, you should pursue a finding that the applicant is ineligible" for a visa, the memo says. The Roosevelt Institute has released its report on the U.S. media crisis. Its key conclusion: "The crisis facing American journalism is the predictable outcome of decades of corporate libertarian media policy that prioritized commercial logics over democracy." Here's the full analysis.

The Political Economy of the US Media System: Excavating the Roots of the Present Crisis - Roosevelt Institute

Bilal Baydoun, Shahrzad Shams, and Victor Pickard trace the roots of the US media crisis to decades of deregulation and commercial capture, outlining how consolidation, news deserts, and platform dominance threaten democratic infrastructure and sow fertile ground for authoritarian capture of our information channels. Their analysis shows why a reinvisioned, democratic media system must be insulated from both commercial and state pressures.

A team at three U.S. universities developed an AI-powered browser extension that modifies how content appears on X and then tested it on 1,200 participants in the run up to the 2024 U.S. presidential election. The tool scans posts for anti-democratic and negative partisan views (such as calling for violence towards supporters of an opposing party) and then re-orders the posts so polarizing content is shown either more or less to participants. The scientists found that attitudes towards the opposing party changed on average by two points, and that the participants who saw less hostile content reported feeling less angry and sad while using X. The extension did not need the participation of X and, the team behind it noted, could be a way of reranking social media posts "without platform collaboration." Here's more from @euronews.
